U2 sur les traces de David Bowie. Tout comme l’interprète de Heroes, qui s’est installé à Berlin en 1976 pour trouver du sang neuf, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton et Larry Mullen se rendent dans la capitale allemande en 1990 pour écrire leur septième album. Le mur étant tombé un an auparavant, il règne sur place une atmosphère de liberté, tout en étant quelque peu chaotique. Produit par Brian Eno et Daniel Lanois, Achtung Baby mêle ces deux ambiances, à la fois dans le fond et dans la forme. Musicalement, c’est plus expérimental, industriel et électronique que dans les précédents opus du groupe, sans pour autant abandonner un certain lyrisme. Quant aux paroles, elles respectent le cahier des charges des Irlandais, transcendant pour beaucoup d’entre elles des problématiques sentimentales afin d’évoquer les relations humaines de manière plus générale (So Cruel, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses). Berlin oblige, l’unification est au cœur de certains titres, à commencer par le célébrissime One. Mais là encore, Bono y apporte un souffle universel.

Cet exil berlinois n’étant finalement pas très concluant d’un point de vue artistique, ils finiront Achtung Baby à la maison, dans des studios irlandais. Cependant, les traces de l’Allemagne se font sentir dans certains titres, à commencer par Zoo Station, en référence à la station de métro Zoologischer Garten. Quant au très rock Until the End of The World, il a été écrit pour le film éponyme du réalisateur allemand Wim Wenders. Il s’agit d’une conversation fictive entre Jésus et Judas, portée par un puissant solo de guitare signé The Edge. Eno résumera l’album européen de U2 en ces termes : « Les mots-clés de ce disque sont trash, sombre, sexy et industriel (tout ce qui est bon) mais aussi sérieux, poli, doux, juste, rock et linéaire (tout ce qui est mauvais) ». Chronique

U2 sur les traces de David Bowie. Tout comme l’interprète de Heroes, qui s’est installé à Berlin en 1976 pour trouver du sang neuf, Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton et Larry Mullen se rendent dans la capitale allemande en 1990 pour écrire leur septième album. Le mur étant tombé un an auparavant, il règne sur place une atmosphère de liberté, tout en étant quelque peu chaotique. Produit par Brian Eno et Daniel Lanois, Achtung Baby mêle ces deux ambiances, à la fois dans le fond et dans la forme. Musicalement, c’est plus expérimental, industriel et électronique que dans les précédents opus du groupe, sans pour autant abandonner un certain lyrisme. Quant aux paroles, elles respectent le cahier des charges des Irlandais, transcendant pour beaucoup d’entre elles des problématiques sentimentales afin d’évoquer les relations humaines de manière plus générale (So Cruel, Even Better Than the Real Thing, Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses). Berlin oblige, l’unification est au cœur de certains titres, à commencer par le célébrissime One. Mais là encore, Bono y apporte un souffle universel.

Cet exil berlinois n’étant finalement pas très concluant d’un point de vue artistique, ils finiront Achtung Baby à la maison, dans des studios irlandais. Cependant, les traces de l’Allemagne se font sentir dans certains titres, à commencer par Zoo Station, en référence à la station de métro Zoologischer Garten. Quant au très rock Until the End of The World, il a été écrit pour le film éponyme du réalisateur allemand Wim Wenders. Il s’agit d’une conversation fictive entre Jésus et Judas, portée par un puissant solo de guitare signé The Edge. Eno résumera l’album européen de U2 en ces termes : « Les mots-clés de ce disque sont trash, sombre, sexy et industriel (tout ce qui est bon) mais aussi sérieux, poli, doux, juste, rock et linéaire (tout ce qui est mauvais) ».
