Ceux qui sont saisi d’une bien compréhensible ivresse, au vu de la discographie pléthorique du plus célèbre tromboniste salsero (une quarantaine d’albums en nom propre, sans décompter les productions extérieures, ni les réalisations collectives), se saisiront avec fièvre de ce double album.
The Player… permet en effet un survol raisonné et économique de l’œuvre de Colón, le tout agrémenté d’une importante iconographie, et de notes tout à fait explicites sur les conditions d’enregistrement de ces chansons, qui bouleversèrent l’univers de la musique latine, et le contexte politique et social de l’époque. Le premier volume creuse son sillon dans les années 1970 du chef d’orchestre, ces refrains fondateurs de son style, emmené par le chant extraordinairement juvénile d’Héctor LaVoe.
Le second volume, ou les années Blades, suivant le nom du deuxième, et engagé politiquement, chanteur de l’ensemble (mais la diva Celia Cruz s’y octroie également une apparition), fait état des plus gros succès du groupe, et de la naissance de cette salsa sociale, concernée, politique, qui allait bouleverser les mentalités de tout un public.
Vingt-huit chansons enfiévrées ou roucoulantes, mais jamais décérébrées, et toujours habitées d’un swing invraisemblable, The Player : A Man and His Music se classera dans le Top 20 des meilleures ventes de musique latine de l’année 2007, ce qui, on en conviendra, reste la moindre des choses.

Chronique
Ceux qui sont saisi d’une bien compréhensible ivresse, au vu de la discographie pléthorique du plus célèbre tromboniste salsero (une quarantaine d’albums en nom propre, sans décompter les productions extérieures, ni les réalisations collectives), se saisiront avec fièvre de ce double album.
The Player… permet en effet un survol raisonné et économique de l’œuvre de Colón, le tout agrémenté d’une importante iconographie, et de notes tout à fait explicites sur les conditions d’enregistrement de ces chansons, qui bouleversèrent l’univers de la musique latine, et le contexte politique et social de l’époque. Le premier volume creuse son sillon dans les années 1970 du chef d’orchestre, ces refrains fondateurs de son style, emmené par le chant extraordinairement juvénile d’Héctor LaVoe.
Le second volume, ou les années Blades, suivant le nom du deuxième, et engagé politiquement, chanteur de l’ensemble (mais la diva Celia Cruz s’y octroie également une apparition), fait état des plus gros succès du groupe, et de la naissance de cette salsa sociale, concernée, politique, qui allait bouleverser les mentalités de tout un public.
Vingt-huit chansons enfiévrées ou roucoulantes, mais jamais décérébrées, et toujours habitées d’un swing invraisemblable, The Player : A Man and His Music se classera dans le Top 20 des meilleures ventes de musique latine de l’année 2007, ce qui, on en conviendra, reste la moindre des choses.
