Comment durer et vieillir quand on a si joliment incarné et chanté l’adolescence ? La question se pose pour la plupart des musiciens de rock, et pour Belle And Sebastian en particulier. A la fin des années 90, ce groupe écossais (ré)inventait dans un mélange de romantisme et de gaucherie les chansons pour amour de vacances, les bandes-son des summer camps et de la nostalgie instantanée. Genre de Beach Boys sans la Californie ou de Smiths folk et timide, Belle And Sebastian est devenu le plus grand des petits groupes, un totem indé. Un quart de siècle plus tard, le groupe a perdu quelques fans, autant de cheveux et parfois l’inspiration. Leur musique tient à un fragile équilibre, qui supporte mal l’autoparodie ou les excès, et c’est en revenant à ses fondamentaux que le groupe réussit ici un des meilleurs albums de sa période adulte. A Bit of Previous a été enregistré à domicile, à Glasgow. Dès le deuxième morceau, If They’re Shooting at You, le leader Stuart Murdoch chante faux, et c’est bien. C’est signe que le groupe a gardé sa fraîcheur, l’amateurisme qui a toujours fait son charme. Sur une palette musicale assez large – de la country à l’électropop en passant par la soul –, le groupe délivre ses refrains à reprendre en chœur comme il l’a toujours si bien fait, au soleil, en arrondissant les angles et avec un petit sourire un peu cassé.
