Kacy Hill

Kacy Hill distinguishes her adult alternative pop with a soft voice and spare, offbeat approach. She began her show business career as a model and, later, tour dancer for Kanye West, making her full-length singing debut on West's label with Like a Woman in 2017. She infused her third album, 2021's Simple, Sweet, and Smiling, with doses of synthesizer in the manner of sleek '80s pop, while the more eclectic BUG in 2024 found her widening her sound with a slate of producers while remaining distinctly soft-spoken. Hill entered the music industry in an indirect fashion. She started modeling during high school in her native Phoenix and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career after she graduated. Director and photographer Stephen Garnett introduced her to Jaylien Wesley, a songwriter/producer who had achieved mainstream success with Akon's Top 20 U.S. pop hit "Beautiful." Hill and Wesley collaborated on material, including "Experience," a low-key song that caught the attention of Kanye West. At the time, Hill happened to be working as a dancer on West's Yeezus tour. West subsequently signed Hill to his G.O.O.D. label, and in May 2015, "Experience" was released as the lead song on the Kitsuné America 4 compilation. That October, the label issued Hill's debut EP, Bloo. Two years later, a pair of singles ("Hard to Love" and "Like a Woman") preceded the release of her debut album, June 2017's Like a Woman. Parting ways with G.O.O.D. Music, she self-released the song "I Believe in You" featuring Francis and the Lights in March 2020. It was included on her second album, Is It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again, which followed that June. She was back with another full-length in October 2021; the self-released Simple, Sweet, and Smiling brought synthesizers more consistently to the fore for a sound evocative of '80s adult pop. Another label change was in the cards, and she signed with Nettwerk for the release of her fourth studio LP. Written and produced with a cast of composer/producers, among them Bartees Strange, Sega Bodega, and John Carroll Kirby, May 2024's BUG retained her gentle composure while broadening the landscape of her sound.
