L’Underground Orchestra. Tel est le sobriquet de la nouvelle formation emmenée par Chris Potter. Point de départ de cette aventure, le quartet du même nom – Underground – composé du guitariste Adam Rogers, du pianiste Craig Taborn et du batteur Nate Smith, augmenté de deux bassistes, un quatuor à cordes et un vibraphone piloté par le maître de l’instrument, Steve Nelson. Avec de tels pinceaux en main, Potter signe une fresque sublime. Un album d’une impressionnante densité et d’une richesse harmonique rare. Certains thèmes, amples et cinématographiques à souhait, permettent au saxophoniste de Chicago d’offrir des solos lyriques et inspirés. Lorsque la configuration est plus intimiste, les conversations entre musiciens, complices comme jamais, prennent alors le dessus. C’est surtout le raffinement de l’écriture qui impressionne tout au long d’un enregistrement qui se déguste d’une traite. On sait périlleuses les expériences entre jazz et violons, mais force est de constater qu’avec Imaginary Cities, Chris Potter entre dans la cours des grands ; au point d’être rangé non loin du mythique Charlie Parker With Strings, un de ses disques de chevet… Bref, le premier (très) grand disque de 2015. © MD/Qobuz
