1995. Auf der Insel regieren Oasis, Blur und Pulp. Und dann gibt es da noch Elastica. Die bedienen sich bei New Wave und Punk, basteln im Schnitt zweieinhalb Minuten lange Songs daraus und fertig ist der Hit. Ein Jahr später sind sie auf dem Trainspotting- Soundtrack vertreten, danach macht höchstens noch Bandleaderin Justine Frishmann als (Ex)-Freundin von Blur-Sänger Damon Albarn auf sich aufmerksam, neues Material ist eher Mangelware.
Nach fünf Jahren Pause, bandinternen Umbesetzungen und Ärger mit der Plattenfirma, kommt nun still und leise ein neues Album von Elastica heraus: "The Menace". Bedrohlich wirkt das Album keinesfalls, eher etwas ruhiger, gesetzter und harmloser. Die spielerische Leichtigkeit, welche den Charme des Debuts ausmachte, ist verschwunden. Trotzdem ist noch genug von Elastica in "The Menace" enthalten. Schon allein der Basslauf vom ersten Song "Mad Dog God Dam" versetzt einen fünf Jahre zurück. Auch die Zutaten sind dieselben wie damals: eine gewisse Grundmenge an verzerrten Gitarren, darüber ein wenig leicht schiefer Gesang von Justine und eine Prise Geräusche aus dem Computer.
Aus der Reihe fällt Track Nr. 8 - "Miami Nice" - ein bestechend schönes Instrumentalstück mit flächigen Keyboardsounds und einem hektischen Drumcomputer. Auch "My Sex" erinnert nicht an den typischen Elastica-Sound, eher an Spielereien à la Blur und doch gehört es zu den besten Stücken auf "The Menace". Zum Schluss gibt es dann noch die Coverversion von Trios "Da Da Da" und auch wenn der deutsche Text teilweise etwas belustigend tönt, ist die Variante von Elastica durchaus gelungen.
Die besten 12 Sekunden am neuen Album sind die ersten von "How He Wrote Elastica Man", denn hier klingen Elastica exakt wie auf ihrem Erstling. Leider erreicht "The Menace" nicht ganz die Klasse des Debutalbums. Trotzdem finden sich genug kleine Hits, die die Platte alles andere als langweilig machen. Wie bereits fünf Jahr zuvor bewegen sich Elastica in ihrer eigenen kleinen Welt, die mit dem Rest der britischen Musikszene herzlich wenig zu tun hat. Und das ist gut so.
