Den hatte ja nun wirklich niemand mehr auf der Rechnung: Underground-Ikone und Bühnen-Berserker Fad Gadget sagt wieder ja zu seinen Elektrokamellen. 1986 sagte er nämlich nein, lernte Gitarre und widmete sich unter seinem wirklichen Namen Frank Tovey folkigen Klängen. Unvergessen bleiben aber seine frühen Electro-Wave-Meilensteine, die ihn 1979 als ersten Act in Daniel Millers Mute-Labelstall bugsierten.
Gadgets Sound war streng analog, seine Stimme monoton, der Drum-Computer holprig und die Melodien düster. Geht es um die einflussreichsten Elektrohits der Frühphase, wird sein "Back To Nature" in einem Atemzug mit "Warm Leatherette" von The Normal aka Daniel Miller genannt. Auf vorliegender Best Of sind viele Perlen nun noch einmal zugänglich für alle, die von der ähnlichen Singles-Zusammenstellung aus dem Jahre 1986 nichts wissen.
Und das dürften bald einige sein: seine Mute-Kollegen Depeche Mode haben Gadget nämlich für ihre "Exciter"-Tour verpflichtet. Eingeweihte werden jubeln, wurden DM doch einst im Vorprogramm Fad Gadgets erst entdeckt. Wenn die Retrowelle nun seinen Back Catalogue mitreißt, juble auch ich mit. Zu entdecken gibt es hier nämlich einiges: in "Ricky's Hand" stöpselt Gadget eine Bohrmaschine ein, "Lady Shave" bezaubert mit einem zeitlosen Sequencer-Beat und mit "Collapsing New People" (inkl. Neubauten-Mitglieder) feierte der Brite 1984 seinen einzigen Charteinstieg.
Anreiz für Insider dürfte die Bonus-CD sein, mit der einige verschollene Remixe wieder erhältlich gemacht werden. Allen voran der gelungene Berlin Mix des erwähnten Hits. Der unaussprechliche Remix von "Fireside Favourite" groovt auch gediegener als das ranzige Lagerfeuer-Original, während Extended Version-Effektspielereien wie in "Life On The Line" heute höchstens noch nostalgischen Wert besitzen.
Electroheads sollten hier auf jeden Fall die Roots antesten. Und ich werde mich fühlen wie Kollege Edele bei Cannibal Corpse, wenn Gadget auf der DM-Tournee die Bühnenbretter besteigt.
