Bei amerikanischem Folk geht es um Tradition und Kulturerbe. Von den Ältesten, von einer Generation zur nächsten überlieferte Lieder, die lebendig bleiben und sich weiterentwickeln. Musiker spielen sie innerhalb ihrer Familie und reichen sie weiter. Joachim Cooder ist keine Ausnahme von der Regel. Er ist der Sohn von Ry Cooder, dem unendlich großen Musiker mit seiner nach allen Seiten hin offenen Vision des Folk. Joachim hat oft mit seinem Vater gespielt und heute ist es nun sein Vater, der ihn anlässlich seines Debütalbums Over That Road I’m Bound begleitet, welches dem Repertoire eines Old-Time-Musikers gewidmet ist, Uncle Dave Macon. Letzterer kam 1870 zur Welt und starb 1952. Er war einer der Gründerväter der Folk- und Countrymusik, den man an seiner hohen, näselnden Stimme und an seinem nervösen Banjospiel erkennt. Joachim Cooder erweist ihm die Ehre. Da er aber zu den Progressisten zählt, modernisiert er seine Versionen, interpretiert sie neu und eignet sie sich somit an. Erstens spielt er auf seiner elektrischen Mbira, diesem seltsamen von afrikanischen Vorbildern inspirierten Instrument, einer Mischung aus Xylophon und Lamellophon, dessen graziöser Klang den Ton des Albums bestimmt. Und für seine Arrangements ließ er sich dann sowohl von Musik aus Afrika inspirieren (man kann den alten Farka Touré hören und Alis Sohn an der Gitarre) als auch von Irland und den Appalachen. Die Vokalharmonien streifen uns wie warmer Wind und die Saiteninstrumente (Gitarre, Violine, Banjo…) weben neue Motive, denen als Vorlage die Songs von Uncle Dave Macon dienen. Die Produktion des Ganzen ist perfekt, subtil, modern, und streicht uns sanft um die Ohren, ohne je rückständig zu sein. Joachim Cooder ist sehr wohl seines Vaters Sohn. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
