Bria

A project led by the brooding vocals of Bria Salmena, Bria's intimate, noir-inflected alternative country-rock stands in contrast to the singer's commanding delivery as leader of post-punk revivalists Frigs. Bria debuted with a set of languid, reverb-drenched country covers, Cuntry Covers, Vol. 1, in 2021. Conceived during a pandemic lockdown in 2020, Bria's debut EP emerged from Salmena's desire to forgo songwriting and instead reflect back the music that spoke to her during what was a period of loneliness and intense dread. Salmena, Frigs guitarist Duncan Hay Jennings, and backing vocalist Jaime McCuaig ended up staying together at a hobby farm in Hockley Hills, Ontario, Canada, where they recorded Bria's debut EP in the farmhouse living room. The project signed with Sub Pop in mid-2021. Featuring songs originally by Karen Dalton, Waylon Jennings, and John Cale, among others, Cuntry Covers, Vol. 1 appeared on the label that September.
