Nachdem Alex Paterson The Orb, die Pioniergruppe der ersten britischen Elektrowelle auf ein Soloprojekt reduziert hatte, entdeckte er 2018 bei seinem Album No Sounds Are out of Bounds wieder seine Vorliebe für das Featuring (Roger Eno, Hollie Cook und Jah Wobble). Dabei sagte er, er hätte wieder zur kooperativen Variante des Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld (1991) zurückgefunden, das so Vieles ins Rollen gebracht hatte. Nach zwei, bei Kompakt erschienenen Platten knüpft sein 16. Album, Abolition of the Royal Familia, direkt an seinen Vorgänger an, denn Roger Eno ist erneut an Bord gekommen und Michael Rendall ist zur zweiten Hälfte des Duos aufgestiegen, nachdem er bis dahin nur auf Tourneen mitgespielt hatte (nur so nebenbei - auch Rendall hatte zuvor schon mit Eno und Cook zusammengearbeitet).
Es gibt also sehr wohl einen roten Faden – Protest am Establishment, die königliche Familie hatte im 17. Und 18. Jahrhundert den Opiumhandel in Indien unterstützt -– das ist aber für The Orb kein Grund, sich nicht auch hier wieder raffiniert wie immer in allen Musikgattungen ringsum umzusehen. Das Album startet mit House (Daze), der immer düsterer wird, mit mehr und mehr Uptempo (House of Narcotics, aber auch das exklusive Hawk Kings, eine Hommage an Stephen Hawking, Fan der Gruppe). Danach schlängelt man sich zwischen Ambient-Klängen hindurch (Pervitinn, wie eine roboterhafte Führung durch die Kheops-Pyramide, mit Audioguide in französischer und deutscher Sprache), Dub (Say Cheese und Ital Orb) oder auch Drum’n’Bass, wie wir es von Goldie kennen (The Queen of Hearts). Zu Ende geht die Platte mit dem orakelhaften Slave Till U Die No Matter What U Buy, das uns mit dieser brüllender Stimme den Atem anhalten lässt: Gruppen von mehr als zwei Personen sind verboten! Und damit das Vergnügen noch ein bisschen anhält, schieben The Orb auch noch 12 zusätzliche Dub-Versionen nach! © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
