Zugegeben, anfangs war ich eher skeptisch, was ".5: The Gray Chapter" anging. Klangen die ersten Schnipsel aus dem Zusammenhang gerissen doch entweder nach aufgekochtem Möchtegern-Old School-Aggressor-Revival oder nach Stone Sour 2.0.

Stimmt, es klingt nach Stone Sour. Immerhin stehen dieselben kreativen Köpfe hinter beiden Projekten. Nur unterscheiden sich die entstehenden Gesamtbilder eben grundsätzlich. Und so lange die Musik gut ist, wenn kümmert es da, welcher Name darüber prangt? Es geht ums Hören, nicht ums Sehen, liebe Leute.

Mit Paul Gray und Joey Jordison hätte das Ergebnis sicherlich anders geklungen. Aber die beiden sind nun einmal nicht mehr Teil der Band. Was passiert logischerweise, wenn zwei treibende Kräfte wegfallen? Richtig: Veränderung. Es wäre schlimm, wenn nicht.

Slipknot anno 2014 klingen facettenreicher denn je. ".5: The Gray Chapter" mag nicht an die pure Raserei des Debütalbums heranreichen. Bei weitem nicht! Aber sich zu wiederholen, bringt schließlich niemandem etwas. So finden sich also auf Studioalbum Nummer fünf Melodien wie bei, nun ja, Stone Sour. Allerdings in einem wesentlich düstereren Kontext.

"The Devil In I" beispielsweise führt Verweichlichungsunkenrufe ad absurdum, hört man ihn im Albumflow mit "Sarcastrophe" und "AOV". "The Negative One" erstrahlt dank einleitendem "Be Prepared For Hell" in völlig neuem Licht. Vor dem Hintergrund der damit aufgebauten Folterkammeratmosphäre wirkt der Track lange nicht so halbgar wie im Single-Modus.

Mit "Killpop" schafft es sogar ein Stück Radiotauglichkeit auf die Platte. Entgegen seinem Titel startet der Song nämlich ziemlich poppig. Wisst ihr was? Geil! Obwohl das Solo gegen Ende etwas einfallslos daherkommt. Ebenso das nachfolgende "Skeptic", das ein wenig zu simpel ausfällt, um wirklich zu zünden. Harte Drums sind zwar schön schön und gut. Mit einem solchen Riff darüber ziehen jedoch selbst Slipknot niemanden vom Hocker.

Aber die Highlights kommen ja erst noch. Zunächst "Goodbye". Nach extrem ruhiger, häufig an "Vermillion Pt. 2" erinnernder erster Hälfte, steigert sich der Song dank abrupt einsetzendem Knüppelschlagzeug und schlichten, dafür diesmal wirkungsvollen Gitarrenwänden zu einer bärenstarken Machtdemonstration. Es geht eben nicht darum, möglichst brutal zuzuschlagen. Slipknot beweisen, dass sie weit mehr können. Ja, liebe Hater, Coreys Erfahrungen mit Stone Sour hatten hier gewiss ihre Finger im Spiel. Positiv, wohlgemerkt.

Das Zuschlagen hat Mr. Taylor natürlich trotzdem nicht verlernt. Über "Custer" dürften sich besonders alle Prügelknaben da draußen freuen. Gnadenlos und roh wechseln Slipknot zwischen bedrohlichem Lauern und echter, eruptiver Aggression hin und her. Ein fieses Sample macht den Wahnsinn perfekt. Aufgesetzt klingt hier rein gar nichts. Okay, ob der inflationäre Gebrauch des F-Wortes unbedingt sein musste, sei mal dahingestellt. Naja, zumindest Stoff für Mitsingspielchen: "Cut, cut, cut me up and / Fuck, fuck, fuck me up!"

Beim sechsminütigen Abschluss "If Rain Is What You Want" kommt man dann zugegebenermaßen um den Stone Sour-Vergleich endgültig nicht mehr umhin. Auch wenn diese Doomversion von Coreys Zweitband eher unspektakulär aus dem Album geleitet – ".5: The Gray Chapter" verkörpert eine würdige Fortführung der Geschichte Slipknots.

Jeder wird mit der Scheibe sicherlich nicht glücklich werden. Dafür entfernt sich der Neuner einfach zu weit von seinen Ursprüngen. Aber in einem Buch immer dasselbe Kapitel zu lesen, wäre doch langweilig, oder? Das fünfte offenbart eben neue Seiten. Die Handschrift ist noch immer klar erkennbar, die Story entwickelt sich, wandelt sich, hält den ein oder anderen Twist parat. Dem Ende strebt sie garantiert noch nicht entgegen.

Slipknot anno 2014 klingen facettenreicher denn je. ".5: The Gray Chapter" mag nicht an die pure Raserei des Debütalbums heranreichen. Bei weitem nicht! Aber sich zu wiederholen, bringt schließlich niemandem etwas. So finden sich also auf Studioalbum Nummer fünf Melodien wie bei, nun ja, Stone Sour. Allerdings in einem wesentlich düstereren Kontext.

"The Devil In I" beispielsweise führt Verweichlichungsunkenrufe ad absurdum, hört man ihn im Albumflow mit "Sarcastrophe" und "AOV". "The Negative One" erstrahlt dank einleitendem "Be Prepared For Hell" in völlig neuem Licht. Vor dem Hintergrund der damit aufgebauten Folterkammeratmosphäre wirkt der Track lange nicht so halbgar wie im Single-Modus.

Mit "Killpop" schafft es sogar ein Stück Radiotauglichkeit auf die Platte. Entgegen seinem Titel startet der Song nämlich ziemlich poppig. Wisst ihr was? Geil! Obwohl das Solo gegen Ende etwas einfallslos daherkommt. Ebenso das nachfolgende "Skeptic", das ein wenig zu simpel ausfällt, um wirklich zu zünden. Harte Drums sind zwar schön schön und gut. Mit einem solchen Riff darüber ziehen jedoch selbst Slipknot niemanden vom Hocker.

Aber die Highlights kommen ja erst noch. Zunächst "Goodbye". Nach extrem ruhiger, häufig an "Vermillion Pt. 2" erinnernder erster Hälfte, steigert sich der Song dank abrupt einsetzendem Knüppelschlagzeug und schlichten, dafür diesmal wirkungsvollen Gitarrenwänden zu einer bärenstarken Machtdemonstration. Es geht eben nicht darum, möglichst brutal zuzuschlagen. Slipknot beweisen, dass sie weit mehr können. Ja, liebe Hater, Coreys Erfahrungen mit Stone Sour hatten hier gewiss ihre Finger im Spiel. Positiv, wohlgemerkt.

Das Zuschlagen hat Mr. Taylor natürlich trotzdem nicht verlernt. Über "Custer" dürften sich besonders alle Prügelknaben da draußen freuen. Gnadenlos und roh wechseln Slipknot zwischen bedrohlichem Lauern und echter, eruptiver Aggression hin und her. Ein fieses Sample macht den Wahnsinn perfekt. Aufgesetzt klingt hier rein gar nichts. Okay, ob der inflationäre Gebrauch des F-Wortes unbedingt sein musste, sei mal dahingestellt. Naja, zumindest Stoff für Mitsingspielchen: "Cut, cut, cut me up and / Fuck, fuck, fuck me up!"

Beim sechsminütigen Abschluss "If Rain Is What You Want" kommt man dann zugegebenermaßen um den Stone Sour-Vergleich endgültig nicht mehr umhin. Auch wenn diese Doomversion von Coreys Zweitband eher unspektakulär aus dem Album geleitet – ".5: The Gray Chapter" verkörpert eine würdige Fortführung der Geschichte Slipknots.

Jeder wird mit der Scheibe sicherlich nicht glücklich werden. Dafür entfernt sich der Neuner einfach zu weit von seinen Ursprüngen. Aber in einem Buch immer dasselbe Kapitel zu lesen, wäre doch langweilig, oder? Das fünfte offenbart eben neue Seiten. Die Handschrift ist noch immer klar erkennbar, die Story entwickelt sich, wandelt sich, hält den ein oder anderen Twist parat. Dem Ende strebt sie garantiert noch nicht entgegen.
