This comeback raises the bar far higher than the one dating back to 2010, when the English group churned out three albums in six years’ time, none of which were particularly compelling, especially not the last one to date, Anarchytecture (2016). Of course, the announcement of another comeback revved up the band’s fans, but it also raised the question of what the record to mark the occasion might sound like. Skunk Anansie made the very smart move of dropping an album teeming with the energy of her early days, all while making a clean break from the past. She walks a fine line, and sticks the landing perfectly. An Artist Is An Artist gets right back to business– Skin isn’t here to whisper sweet nothings into our ears. Nevertheless, this is more than just a revival of the punk-influenced alt rock of the 90s. You can still feel the tension, but expressed in different ways, like on the catchy pump-up single “Cheers.”

Skunk Anansie still loves toying with the different styles that forged her own, like the ska and reggae sounding verses of “Shoulda Been You,” or the piano on “Lost and Found,” a track that lies somewhere between soul and pop. Different synthetic sounds, often bordering on the industrial, are heard throughout the album, produced by TV on the Radio’s David Sitek, whose finesse and intelligence lend the music depth without ever weighing it down. And then there’s Skin’s unique voice, always in perfect step with whatever style of song she sings, one of many examples being the tenderness she brings to the final track “Meltdown.” 30 years after the release of her debut album, Skunk Anansie makes an outstanding comeback that proves her music is as fresh as ever. © Guillaume Ley/Qobuz
