Melodista increíble, instrumentista virtuoso, cantante acrobático, habilidoso soulman y poderoso funkster, ¡Stevie Wonder sabe hacerlo todo! ¡Y esto desde el principio! A la edad de 10 años, para ser precisos –el joven Steveland Judkins había nacido el 13 de mayo de 1950–, fue presentado por Ronnie White de los Miracles de Smokey Robinson al carismático jefe de la Motown, Berry Gordy. Un primer gran éxito vino tres años después (Fingertips Pt.2). El niño ciego estrella demuestra ser un trabajador nato, desgraciadamente prisionero de un contrato que no podía ser más vinculante, inventado como siempre por un calculador Gordy. Stevie es el fenómeno de feria del jefe de la Motown, que consigue discos de oro gracias a una inteligente mezcla de soul, R&B y pop. Habría que esperar a 1970 para escuchar su primera producción personal, con raíces rhythm’n’blues: Signed, Sealed And Delivered. En su 21 cumpleaños, el 13 de mayo de 1971, el dulce Little Stevie de Saginaw, Michigan, aprovechó su libertad artística para darle a Gordy la música con la que soñaba día y noche. Social y políticamente comprometido, musicalmente a la vanguardia de las nuevas tecnologías, entre 1972 y 1974 el nuevo Stevie Wonder grabó cuatro álbumes esenciales que se mueven entre el soul, el funk, el rock, el R&B y el pop con gran originalidad: Music Of My Mind (1972), Talking Book (1972), Innervisions (1973) y Fulfillingness' First Finale (1974). Apoyado por Robert Margouleff y Malcolm Cecil, dos ingenieros de sonido inseparables de este fructífero período, Stevie Wonder exploró las capacidades de los sintetizadores entonces en boga (Moog, Arp, Clavinet) y las diversas técnicas de grabación, sobregrabación y regrabación. Excepcional multi-instrumentista, quedó impresionado y por tanto influido por el concepto musical e ideológico de Sly and the Family Stone y por la obra maestra de Marvin Gaye, What’s Going On, el álbum publicado en mayo de 1971 que llevó a la Motown a la edad adulta. Esta edad de oro ya no volvería para Stevie Wonder salvo parcialmente, a excepción quizás de la brillante Songs In The Key Of Life (1976). Pero son esas cuatro obras maestras del período 1972/74 las que contienen las perlas originales del funk (como Superstition, Boogie On Reggae Woman o Higher Ground) que influirán en hordas de músicos de todo el mundo, y no sólo en el terreno del groove. Siempre muy ligada a las estructuras melódicas y armónicas de la música pop, la música de Stevie Wonder tiene un alma totalmente única que suena como ninguna otra. © MZ
