“¡La diferencia entre los Stranglers y todas las demás bandas punk fue él!”, escribió Hugh Cornell (cantante-bailarín de la influyente banda inglesa desde 1974 hasta 1990) en su página de Facebook, rindiendo homenaje a su antiguo compañero Dave Greenfield, que murió de Covid-19 el 3 de mayo de 2020, a la edad de 71 años, y resumiendo perfectamente la singularidad y originalidad de la historia de este grupo. Esos sintetizadores, pianos, órganos, clavicémbalos y otros teclados operados con furia por Greenfield son verdaderamente la columna vertebral del sonido de este cuarteto nacido en 1974 en Guildford, Surrey, y compuesto además por el baterista Jet Black y el bajista franco-británico Jean Jacques Burnel.

Capaces de tocar el más virulento post punk pero también de proponer baladas barrocas, los Stranglers sorprendieron tanto con sus sonidos como con sus palabras. Tenían un gran talento musical, eran misóginos y alborotadores, y no se mezclaban con los Sex Pistols, los Clash, los Damned o los Buzzcocks. Periodistas secuestrados en armarios, strippers en jaulas en el escenario, peleas frecuentes (un legendario concierto en Niza en 1980 resultó en el arresto y encarcelamiento de la banda) o ataques dirigidos (Burnel rompiendo su bajo sobre la cabeza de Fuck, una figura punk parisina que estaba en la primera fila de un concierto en la Mutualité en 1983): los Stranglers se atrevieron a hacer casi cualquier cosa. En 1982, el exitoso sencillo “Golden Brown”, que glorificaba la heroína a través de un vals (donde Greenfield vuelve a ser el centro) les dio una inesperada fama internacional, muy lejos del himno antigrupo “London Lady” de 1977. Después de la partida de Cornwell en 1990, los demás reiniciaron la máquina episódicamente con una alineación fluctuante. Sin embargo, este período 1977-1990 fue el más creativo para estos Stranglers, que nunca habrían sonado así sin Dave Greenfield.
