Robert Vincent
Specializing in frank and heartfelt Americana, often blending blues, folk, and country influences in either a solo acoustic or full electric band context, Liverpool-raised Robert Vincent released his first solo material in 2012. His composition and performance style betrayed a pop sensibility inspired by Neil Finn of Crowded House, as well as the storytelling ethic of English singer/songwriters of the '70s. Four years on from his debut LP, Bob Harris presented him with an Emerging Artist decoration at the 2016 U.K. Americana Awards. This led to a deal with Brighton's At the Helm records, who issued his second album, I'll Make the Most of My Sins, in 2017. In turn, Harris invited him to appear on the BBC TV reboot Old Grey Whistle Test: For One Night Only, marking a turning point in his career and sending his material to the upper reaches of various streaming country charts. February 2020's politically charged In This Town You're Owned was another career high, as renowned producer Ethan Johns not only produced the record but also performed on the sessions.
Born in Crosby, a coastal Merseyside town, Vincent was raised seven miles south in the more musically celebrated city of Liverpool. Records played at home ranged from his father's Johnny Cash collection to the Pink Floyd albums owned by his brother. He performed in various school bands, leading to a job -- at 16 years old -- as a roadie for a covers act who occasionally allowed him to get up and sing. Soon afterwards, Vincent became a father and worked in catering roles and estate agency to make ends meet, while also continuing to play music. In 2004, as part of an act called Boa, he won the opportunity to record at Sun Studios, Memphis, but the group soon disbanded. By 2007, Vincent was recording with another group, Night Parade, but their album never saw release. Further unreleased sessions were partly engineered by Pete Smith, revered for his production work with artists such as the Police and Sheryl Crow.
It was Smith who Vincent called on to assist with production on his debut LP in 2011, but this wouldn't see release as Life in Easy Steps until February 2013. In the interim, he issued the 2012 EPs The Bomb and My Pill, which enjoyed radio play on BBC Radio 2. Post-album promotional activity included an appearance at the Irish Sea sessions at Liverpool's Royal Philharmonic Hall. By personal request, Vincent was the main support to James Blunt at the city's 11,000-capacity Echo Arena in November 2014, and the following year saw him embark on his first headline tour. His 2017 LP I'll Make the Most of My Sins won the UK Album of the Year award at the Americana Music Association UK Awards. Trips to Nashville in both 2018 and 2019 for appearances at AmericanaFest helped to raise Vincent's profile in like-minded U.S. circles, before In This Town You're Owned was recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales, in two weeks.
