Adam Ant rebounded from what seemed to be terminal has-been status with the sturdy WONDERFUL. Prior to the record's release, Ant had made a series of middling albums, concentrating instead on trying to build his acting career. With WONDERFUL, the then 41-year-old Ant created a work that was more suitably "adult." Those expecting to hear the sounds of yesteryear--tribal drums, Indian imagery, and silly pirate tales--will note their conspicuous absence. From the opener, "Won't Take That Talk," it's obvious that Ant has grown up a bit and the song's darker tones and heavier guitar suit the newfound maturity.
Ant is still somewhat obsessed with matters of the flesh, however, as "Beautiful Dream" and "Gotta Be A Sin" prove. The difference is the quotient of crass material is markedly lower and the production provides a more contemporary aural canvas than his early slapdash camp. The title track and "Angel" are bona fide ballads that roll out rather naturally, making WONDERFUL easily the most emotionally honest and warm album of his career.
