The Epiphoni Consort

London's Epiphoni Consort was created in order to fill a gap between amateur and professional groups in the city's choral music scene. Its members include individuals who have professional-quality vocal skills but work full-time in other careers. The Epiphoni Consort was founded in 2014 by its current director, Tim Reader, who saw an opportunity for a choir whose membership landed between amateur and professional status. Reader was a choral conducting graduate of the University of Exeter. The group has between 12 and 16 members, accepted by audition. Annually, the Epiphoni Consort performs two or three London concerts, plus approximately that many for-hire concerts, including weddings and corporate events. The choir also performs once or twice a year at Evensong services at London churches and performs other church services in return for a discount on using church spaces for rehearsals. Group members are also expected to participate with each other in non-musical social events. For out-of-town engagements, of which there are one or two per year, members contribute to travel costs. In 2017, the Epiphoni Consort made its recording debut on the Delphian label, releasing the album David Bednall: Sudden Light. The group has won awards at the prestigious Locus Iste Competition and the London A Cappella Choir Competition. The Epiphoni Consort performs choral music from all periods. It has appeared at Westminster Abbey, St. Martin in the Fields, and St. John's Smith Square, among other major British venues. It has also been heard on BBC radio (in the BBC4 documentary The Joy of Rachmaninov and BBC2's documentary Terry Pratchett: Back In Black, singing Thomas Tallis's 40-part motet Spem in alium on the latter. Large-scale performances include those with the Echo Ensemble (Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil and Duruflé's Requiem) and the Kensington Symphony Orchestra (Walton's oratorio Belshazzar's Feast). The Epiphoni Consort returned on Delphian in 2020 with the album When Love Speaks: Choral Music by Owain Park and in 2022 with Precious Things: Choral Music by Bernard Hughes.
