No concebidos como un álbum doble, pero imposibles de separar como trabajos independientes, Use Your Illusion es un brillante ejemplo de una banda con éxito repentino que da rienda suelta a su ambición. Necesitaron casi tres años para acabar el trabajo, tiempo en el que los guitarristas Slash e Izzy Stradlin trataron de mantener al grupo fiel a sus raíces de rock duro, mientras el vocalista Axl Rose tenía pretensiones de convertirse en Queen y Elton John. Podrían haberse dividido ambas aspiraciones entre los dos discos, pero, en vez de eso, las hicieron añicos. Es sólo una coincidencia que Use Your Illusion I contenga más dosis de rock duro que el II. En general, el I es más sólido que el II, incluso aunque haya mayor cantidad de relleno y resulte difícil encontrar los temas destacados en medio de la rimbombante producción.
