A great album retracing those heady Soul days of the late 60's and early 70's. This 1972 expanded release reissued in 2007 features first the original UK Atlantic 12-track vinyl LP compilation This Is Soul issued March 1968 and including hits by Arthur Conley, Aretha Franklin, Ben E. King, Percy Sledge, Solomon Burke…, and some others snatched from the Stax catalog and signed by Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd, Carla Thomas. A killer collection of deep soul intended for foreign markets — partly as a calling card for the new genius of Atlantic (all artists are American), and maybe also as a demonstration of the style of "soul" which was a pretty unfamiliar musical term at that point. The additional 17 tracks as bonus have been selected to fit the spirit of the original LP compilation. (Qobuz)
