Twenty years is a long time to wait for a proper Jethro Tull studio release, particularly when the previous one was a Christmas album. The frontman, singer and flautist Ian Anderson, is the only member of the original line-up left (Martin Barre, the guitarist who joined in 1968, just one year after the creation of the band, left in 2012). Anderson is now accompanied by members of the backing band that had played with him during his recent solo endeavours. To see him return as Jethro Tull after such a long hiatus is surprising, particularly with this line-up.

So, has Jethro Tull changed much after all this time? The folk vibe is definitely still there, but the progressive element less so. The Zealot Gene is still essentially progressive, after all it is a concept album featuring stories from many different Bible verses, all retold like fairy tales. The result is a record on which the longest track, Mrs. Tibbets, lasts less than 6 minutes. Perhaps Tull is looking to adopt a sound that’s a bit more pop?

The frontman’s flute is still a trademark, as are the skilfully organised melodies that are distributed among the different instruments (for example, The Betrayal of Joshua Kynde, which feels similar to the band's old work from fifty years ago). The rest is a mid-tempo ensemble which can only be fully appreciated once you’ve had time to fully digest it. Even if The Zealot Gene feels worlds away from the band’s previous Studio Albums like Aqualung or Thick as a Brick, it still feels like pure, unapologetic Jethro Tull— and it’s masterful from start to finish. © Chief Brody/Qobuz
