This Giant Steps collection of recordings made by the Jimmy Giuffre 3 is a stellar if incomplete collection of 19 tunes recorded by Giuffre, trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, and guitarist Jim Hall. They span the year 1957, beginning with cuts issued on the self-titled album cut for Atlantic in January of that year, and end with tracks from Western Suite issued in 1958. Included here are also two different versions of the classic "Four Brothers" composition, one that features Giuffre solo and is overdubbed (quite unique at the time), and another performed by the trio. Also included here as a bonus are a pair of live recordings including live performances of "The Train and the River" (Giuffre performs on clarinet, tenor, and baritone saxophones) and "Pony Express," the former of which was used in the film Jazz on a Summer's Day. This certainly is nowhere near a complete collection -- though one exists on Gambit -- but it is a fine-sounding, well-priced anthology.
