Jamie Cullum tendió de forma demasiado pronunciada hacia la electrónica de coffeehouse en su cuarto álbum, Catching Tales, oscureciendo sus encantos como pianista de jazz y cantante de soft rock, por lo que fue un acierto volver a sus puntos fuertes en The Pursuit. A pesar de empezar por una versión con instrumentos de viento de “Just One of Those Things” de Cole Porter, The Pursuit no es ni de lejos una vuelta al territorio de Harry Connick, Jr. Cullum pisa fuerte con un soft rock melódico, creando una base para incorporar su afición al jazz y a la electrónica persistente. Como The Pursuit está producido como un álbum pop, estos adornos de electrónica terminan por mezclarse sin fisuras, demostrando lo que se le da mejor a Cullum: pop para el público de masas adulto, ya sea en el ritmo insistentemente apresurado de “Mixtape” o en el maravilloso tema retro al estilo de los 70, “I’m All Over It”.
