El American dream es un tema aparentemente inagotable. Ya se aborde frontal o lateralmente, por un lado u otro, supone el carburante último de una verdadera horda de songwriters; y ello aunque alguno ni siquiera haya nacido ahí, en las Américas. Es el caso de J.S. Ondara. Porque este joven keniata, a quien su sello califica de «eslabón perdido entre Tracy Chapman y Michael Kiwanuka» (referencias evidentes pero ciertas), se ha sumado igualmente al carro. En 2013 Ondara se instalaba en casa de su tía de Minneapolis. Bares, clubs y calles se convierten, así, en escenario de las canciones de un chaval que hasta entonces no había salido de su Nairobi natal, canciones construidas a base de guitarra acústica con el objetivo, seguramente, de convertirse en el Bob Dylan del tercer milenio. En el Dylan de The Freewheelin’, su disco fetiche, junto al Nebraska de Springsteen… Pero, claro, si se hubiera limitado a clonar a esos colosos el asunto no tendría mayor interés. Y en Tales of America elude tal peligro. Porque J.S. Ondara dispone de una voz propia: es ese tono quejumbroso y una pizca andrógino lo que marca la diferencia. En cuanto a la instrumentación, se añaden las bienvenidas aportaciones, especialmente, del gran Andrew Bird, de Griffin Goldsmith (de Dawes) o de Joey Ryan (del dúo Milk Carton Kids). Para una América enfrentada, para un mundo más confuso que nunca, las canciones de J.S. Ondara son bastante más que simples apósitos.
