Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps gets top billing on this Harmonia Mundi release, kicking off the 50th-anniversary of the composer's death. The performance by the Orchestre de Paris under Pablo Heras-Casado is precise, on the slow side, perhaps a bit lumbering for a work that is about human sacrifice, but Heras-Casado gets the orchestra to punch above its weight with fine work in the winds and brass. In any event, the listener interested in Le sacre du printemps has plenty of places to go. The real news here is the Violin Concerto No. 3 ("Alhambra") of Péter Eötvös, a brand new work that appeared in 2019 and now receives its world premiere recording. Eötvös, who was 75 by that time, is the rare example of a composer who seems to be doing his best work as a senior citizen. It's partly that the world is catching up to him; his music is being performed more often, and he is adding to the stock of it. However, it's also that his musical language is unique, making use of a variety of advanced techniques while still striving for accessibility. Here, there are abstract structures (the main theme spells out the letters A-L-H-A-M-B-R-A) and extended techniques (the mandolin that follows the violin like a ghost is tuned in scordatura), but the structure is clear and appealing. "The overall form is free," Eötvös writes, "but it is not a rondo. It is more like a stroll through the mysterious building of the Alhambra." This is easy to imagine, especially with the meditative but lively playing of violin soloist Isabelle Faust. This is an important and enjoyable recording, with fine Harmonia Mundi sound from the Grande Salle Pierre Boulez at the Philharmonie de Paris.
