Erik Satie's set of 21 piano pieces called Sports et Divertissements has often been arranged for other combinations of instruments; its short, satirical bursts of music almost seem to suggest chamber settings. And French quintet Percussions Claviers de Lyon (Keyboard Percussion of Lyon), consisting of marimbas, xylophones, and vibraphones, has had a long career of unique reinterpretations of familiar musical classics, not all of them modern or French (their take on music from West Side Story stands out from the crowd). Those two tendencies converge in extreme fashion with this release of music by Satie: the group not only revises his work for keyboard percussion but brings in its correspondences with words and graphics. The Sports et divertissements, which come last on the program, are the point of departure (but this is in the Satie spirit). They are accompanied by Satie's original texts: scraps of poetry (in French, without translations) or self-referential commentary. The first half of the album is devoted to familiar Satie works, including the most famous of all, the three Gymnopédies of 1888. These elegant little works, almost antique in their original incarnation, take on entirely new flavors here. As for the faster, harder-edged works, it may be that the satire they encompass gets lost in the haze of resonating keyboard percussion. But reactions to this thoroughly original concept are likely to be entirely individual, and you may find that the Percussions Claviers de Lyon make you feel a breeze from another planet. Sample and see how you like it, and note that the graphics included in the CD booklet are very much in the Satie spirit.
