Al igual que Jeff Beck antes que él, Slash es una superestrella de la guitarra que no sabe cantar ni una nota: una situación que representa un problema considerable cuando llega la hora de grabar un álbum como solista. Después de la disolución de Velvet Revolver, siguió el ejemplo de Supernatural de Santana, contando con un cantante diferente para cada tema. Supernatural fue diseñado con la intención de que Santana lograra un nuevo público, pero Slash se hizo pensando en sus fans de toda la vida, incorporando a viejos roqueros como Ozzy, Lemmy e Iggy para que soportaran la carga del trabajo, e intercalando algunas caras nuevas en el trayecto. Es un plan cómodo y familiar, siendo Fergie la excepción a la regla, puesto que acaba siendo ella la que empuja a Slash en una dirección interesante llena de ganchos.
