Reunions llega un mes después de la muerte de John Prine, mentor de Jason Isbell. Se puede escuchar la influencia en las letras inteligentes y sinceras, que están entre las mejores de la carrera de este grande de la americana. El melancólico Dreamsicle, por ejemplo, evoca la manera en que un divorcio se transmite a la infancia (“New sneakers on the high school court and you swore you’d be there…”), e Isbell ha dicho que estaba particularmente orgulloso de Running With Your Eyes Closed: “It took forever to get you to trust me / Like I was feeding a bird from my hand”. Aunque su voz es singular – la forma en que su acento de Alabama moldea la voz en la “demo tape” de Only Children huele a Southern Comfort – hay algunas secuencias evidentes (la oscura guitarra a lo Mark Knopfler en el asombroso Overseas) pero también sorprendentes: el eco de los Killers en What’ve I Done to Help y en It Gest Easier, acerca de las realidades de la sobriedad.
