The series of Respighi recordings by conductor John Neschling and the Royal Liège Philharmonic has been consistently well-received, and with this 2021 release, there is the added attraction of music that has been somewhat neglected over the years. Mostly commissioned for performances in the U.S. by Arturo Toscanini in New York and Serge Koussevitsky in Boston, these transcriptions of Bach and Rachmaninov were great successes when they first appeared. The Bach transcriptions appeared on the heels of those done by Leopold Stokowski in Philadelphia yet are entirely distinct from them. They end up sounding more like Respighi than Bach, which may not please historical performance aficionados, but then they are not the audience for this music anyhow. Rachmaninov became interested in the transcriptions of his Etudes-Tableaux, sending Respighi programs for the works that he had previously hidden and praising the results. Neschling makes an excellent case for more frequent performances of these pieces, which display Respighi's considerable and not always recognized gifts as an orchestrator. He uses a large orchestra, but the pieces are not monumental in the way that those of Stokowski were, and he reins in the orchestra for the three chorale settings, where the strings dominate. The Rachmaninov pieces are marvelous little tone poems where instruments develop the atmosphere as the music proceeds. Neschling manages the orchestral balances perfectly to reveal Respighi's small details, and he has strong allies in the engineering team from BIS, working (in 2017, not 2020 as stated online) in the Salle Philharmonique de Liège. An excellent album of music that has been unjustly neglected.
