Ralph Vaughan Williams was closely engaged with English folk music from early in his career, but curiously, his actual arrangements of folk songs have never been performed that often in concert settings, and many of the arrangements here are receiving their world premieres. The notes offered by John Francis (quite detailed and worth having for reference) allude to a couple of possible reasons. The songs may have been identified as educational material rather than concert works, and they were, in fact, performed in contests by many thousands of English students. Further, they occupy a distinctive and unfamiliar space; they are neither simple arrangements (except for those done by Cecil Sharp, who collected many of the songs in the U.S. Appalachian mountains and with whom Vaughan Williams worked closely on these collections) nor art songs rooted in folk music. They lie in between these two, and of course, that makes them interesting from a modern perspective; the commercial success of this album is not a surprise. This is the second of a pair of similar recordings, featuring the same fine performers as the first volume: soprano Mary Bevan, tenor Nicky Spence, and baritone Roderick Williams, with pianist William Vann. They give unmannered but sensitive readings that are idiomatic to the material. General listeners interested in just one album, however, might try this one, for they will find several familiar tunes here, including "Barbara Ellen," The Fox, and "The Lovers' Tasks," which is Simon & Garfunkel's "Scarborough Fair" with a different melody. There are also some grim tales of violence. The Albion label deserves commendation for bringing this material to light, and both folk song specialists and general listeners will enjoy this release.
