Cliff Richard was more popular and Johnny Kidd was tougher, but Billy Fury was the first British rock star who truly sounded authentic, boasting a strong, rich voice and the hip-swinging charisma to go with it. Fury was also one of the first British rockers who wrote his own songs, and he could deliver on-stage, judging from the bits of performance footage that survive. When Fury was at the height of his fame in the late '50s and early '60s, BBC Radio was still wary of rock & roll and many artists had to go elsewhere to be heard by their fans; one radio outlet that enthusiastically embraced rock was Radio Luxembourg, a commercial English-language broadcaster in Europe that beamed their signal into Great Britain. The Radio Luxembourg Sessions documents a radio concert by Fury and his backing band the Tornados, in which Fury sings many of his biggest hits (including "Halfway to Paradise," "Wondrous Place," "Play It Cool," and "Last Night Was Made for Love") as well as a number of rock & roll classics (such as "Sweet Little Sixteen," "That's All Right, Mama," and "Money Honey"). While the audio, taken from a broadcast recording rather than the original studio tapes, is far from optimal, for fans who want to hear Billy Fury in live performance at the height of his abilities, this is a valuable historical document. (The Radio Luxembourg Sessions includes a bonus disc featuring demos of the songs Fury wrote for his acclaimed 1960 album The Sound of Fury.)
