Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis was a tall, lean and mean soul-jazz tenor saxophonist whose sound had edgy, bawdy, and deeply bluesy hues that made him one of the most well-liked players of the late '50s. As the '60s came along, his teaming with fellow tenor Johnny Griffin further solidified his bop credentials, while a continuing partnership with organist Shirley Scott brought him into more popular circles. This edition of Prestige Profiles does not include his work with Griffin, nor is it exclusively with Scott, but gives the listener a wide swath of his work in organ combos and vestiges of early soul-jazz, some rhythmically Latin-accented bands, basic swingers, ballads, blues, takes on standards, and one big-band track. This was originally issued as "The Best of Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis", reissued in this form when the Concord label bought out the Prestige catalog. It remains a fine, though not definitive representation of his work while in his prime from 1958 through 1962. Aside from the true classics with Scott like her stabbing chord accented feature "In the Kitchen," the happy, bouncy swinger "Intermission Riff" with trombonist Steve Pulliam, the immortal slow to slower blues "The Rev" and flatted basic blues "The Chef," there are others even more startling. "Last Train from Overbrook" is a stunning display in forward motion, with Ray Barretto and Luis Perez feeding churning hand drum rhythms via Scott to hit the ground running in fifth gear. A beautiful version of "Body & Soul" has Scott's probing organ buoying the sax of Davis, holding spacious tones from Coleman Hawkins more biting than Ben Webster's. Legendary organist Don Patterson and guitarist Paul Weeden team with Davis, bassist George Duvivier and soul-jazz icon drummer Billy James on the talk back, relaxed melody of "Robbins Nest," while the great "Don of the B-3" jumps up on the atypically peppy "I Only Have Eyes for You." There's one track with pianist Horace Parlan -- the spare and bluesy "Goin' to Meetin'," while the stellar 12-piece big-band track "'Trane Whistle" (also featuring Eric Dolphy in the sax section) is a combo of "All Blues" and "'Trane's Blues," arranged by both Oliver Nelson and Ernie Wilkins, and featuring the most wailing solo of the compilation for Davis. The individual Cookbook series of recordings, Jaws in Orbit and Trane Whistle are the most essential albums from Davis, but this collection is a good primer for wanting more from one of the true unsung saxophone giants in modern jazz music.
