Violin duo Trina Basu and Arun Ramamurthy create an otherworldly experience on their debut duo record Nakshatra. Both have a deep passion and understanding of Indian classical raga music, which can be heard from the get-go on the opening track "Offering". The way the pair slide through their melody lines over a held done truly inspires the essence of Indian music. Although one may not expect to hear a violin playing traditional raga music, this western instrument was quite frequently used as a melodic instrument, rather than a sitar, sarod or veena. What is interesting about this duo is that a second violin is also used as a drone instrument in place of the tambura or surpeti.
From the first track to the next ("Tempest"), you are immediately transported between worlds and periods, from south India to the Baroque period. The pair’s delicate harmonic playing slowly evolves into a strong rhythmic motive, showing their skill at blending classical, raga, and experimental music to create something entirely fresh and new.
Basu and Ramamurthy’s unique ability to shift seamlessly between influences culminates on "Migration", a tribute to the duo’s ancestors whose sacrifices and journeys brought them to where they are today. The perpetual motion of the track gives a sense of constant movement, whereas the floating and sporadic melodies have a sense of yearning, always searching for cadence. The final track "Little Road Song", a reimagination of a Bengali composition by Ravi Shankar, created for Satyajit Ray’s iconic 1955 film Pather Panchali, is full to the brim with upbeat folk energy, inspired by Basu's upbringing in the American south. A truly delightful arrangement that blends eastern and western influences.
Nakshatra (Sanskrit for constellation) redefines the boundaries of chamber music and what is possible. The pair evoke emotions from grief and loss, to searching and clarity, all whilst spanning multiple genres and improvisatory methods that are truly spellbinding for the listener. An absolutely delightful listen and a profound insight into Basu and Ramaurthy’s rich and extensive musical knowledge. © Jessica Porter-Langson / Qobuz
