This selection of Giacomo Meyerbeer's religious works, arranged by Dario Salvi who conducts the ensemble on this album, opens a window to a little-known aspect of the German composer. In it we discover Psalms 124 and 86 written when the artist was just 16, before his studies with Father Vogler, which he took alongside classmate Carl Maria von Weber. Psalms, preludes and hymns are presented here alongside extracts from his first opera, Jephtas Gelübde, written in 1812 on a theme which had been widely used in the past, in particular by Carissimi, Charpentier and Haendel.
Born in Brescia in northern Italy, Dario Salvi's training as a saxophonist saw him play in many big bands. After teaching guitar, he turned towards orchestral music which he pursued in Austria, the UK and the US and thus took to unearthing this rather forgotten repertoire. © François Hudry/Qobuz
