Because of its structure and fragmented harmonic language, which gradually led music to abandon tonality, Mahler's Symphony No. 9 challenges many conductors who don't know how to approach it. This first fascinating recording of this work by Bruno Walter in 1938, the creator of the work, allows you to hear all the novelty of a language in the making that had to be tamed at the time. The German conductor Michael Gielen, a solitary figure of orchestral conducting far removed from the media hype, has signed a complete Mahler set that everybody who loves music should know. The ensemble is of a rare perfection and is crowned by a superlative sound recording that allows you to hear the even the smallest details of the Mahlerian orchestration without ever losing sight of the entire thing.
This recording of the Ninth Symphony is a model. Gielen shows us with incomparable logic how much this astonishing music looks to the future and prefigures the Second Viennese School (Schönberg, Berg, Webern) by restoring to the score all its volcanic and expressionist force in a cold and nevertheless moving expression.
Very interestingly, it’s coupled with Ritual and Notations, two works by another composer-conductor, Pierre Boulez, whose place in history could easily be compared to that of Mahler. © François Hudry/Qobuz
