Since 2019, Conway the Machine has had the Midas touch. With the Griselda collective, which also includes Westside Gunn and Benny The Butcher, he has taken the US rap scene by storm, producing a lot of tracks but never putting a foot wrong. La Maquina offers a sombre sound and a timeless flow. This new album is a showpiece studded with well-chosen guest appearances, like JID and Ludacris on Scatter Brain and his Griselda buddies on S.E. Gang. On that latter track, the absence of a heavy beat creates an airy, solemn feeling. It's proof that this rapper's greatest asset, his voice, can shine all by itself. The atmosphere is raw and direct, but Conway is anything but formulaic. He represents rap at its most pure, set free from styles or schools, most notably on the track KD, produced by Murda Beatz.
