The Chiaroscuro Quartet's Haydn recordings, featuring historically oriented performances with gut strings, period bows, and only a hint of vibrato, have not been appearing in chronological order. So this release, the second of a pair covering the late Op. 76 quartets, still leaves admirers of the group with much to look forward to, and these are such fine readings that the quartet may well accrue additional listeners as the set proceeds. The gut strings are especially suited to the reproduction of the unusual chordal effects heard in these quartets, not least the "sunrise" that opens the String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 76, No. 4 (the nickname is of late 19th century origin but is not inapt). Conversely, hear the uneasy chromaticism of the Trio of the Minuet in the String Quartet in D major, Op. 76, No. 5, one of several places where cellist Claire Thirion exploits the unusual growl of her 1720 Carlo Tononi instrument to the hilt. True to its name, the Chiaroscuro Quartet delivers high contrasts of various kinds, including the one between "sophisticated salon and village green," felicitously characterized by Richard Wigmore in the booklet notes. Everywhere, the quartet captures Haydn's humor and his remarkable late-life experimentalism. The group is supported well by BIS engineers, working in the Neumarkt Reitstadel in Germany, an excellent chamber music venue, in 2018 (not 2020, as Chandos states online). A superb Haydn release.
