The Haydn 2032 cycle undertaken by the historical-performance group Il Giardino Armonico and its conductor Giovanni Antonini chooses a thematic approach, grouping Haydn's symphonies by general idea and adding in relevant works by Haydn or other composers. Sometimes this involves a bit of a stretch, but generally, Antonini unearths pleasing connections. On L'Addio, for example, listeners get not only the Symphony No. 45 in F sharp minor, Hob. 1/45 ("Farewell"), but also a farewell-themed operatic scena from Haydn's London years, an earlier symphony with fascinating structural connections to the "Farewell" symphony, and an imposing early symphony that stands in contrast to the whole group. The physical albums in the series come with substantial booklets, and the one here, among other things, outlines various alternate theories for the "Farewell" Symphony. It may be, for example, that the work was not a hint to Prince Esterházy that the musicians wanted to leave town, but a reproach from Papa Haydn himself to musicians who had the habit of skipping out on rehearsals, even in the middle of a work. The Scena di Berenice, Hob. 24a/10 is an attraction in itself; a work of Haydn's London years, it is rarely performed, and better still, the soprano here is the divine Sandrine Piau, keeping her voice in wonderful shape. Probably the other find here for many will be the Symphony No. 15 in D major, Hob. 1/15, where the opening movement reverts to its initial Adagio, rather like the "Farewell" finale. This is matched by an Andante slow movement with a charmingly ethereal quality not often associated with Haydn, and Il Giardino Armonico, nothing if not a well-drilled group by this time, catches the elegance perfectly. Antonini's performances, in general, have a fine feeling for the distinctiveness of these works. Contrary to the information on the Chandos website, the album was not recorded in 2020 but in 2018, at the Euregio Kulturzentrum in the Tyrolese Italian city of Toblach; the sound is clear and idiomatic. A fine choice for anyone following or just wanting to sample Antonini's highly successful series.
