Is Francis Poulenc’s art quintessentially French? It is rather universal as proven by this amazing album dedicated to his chamber music for wind instruments performed by the Wien-Berlin Ensemble, a wind quintet made up of soloists from the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras, founded in 1983 by the flautist Wolfgang Schulz.
For this record, recorded in 1989 by Deutsche Grammophon, the German musicians called on James Levine, the prestigious music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, who is also an excellent pianist. A supreme luxury that allows us to enjoy the warm, moiré tones of Karl Leister’s clarinet even more. Leister was Karajan's soloist in Berlin for over thirty years. There is also the intense oboe of Hansjörg Schellenberger, also a soloist in Berlin from 1980 to 2001, and the playful flute of Wolfgang Schulz, a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic throughout his career.
We also enjoy the bassoon, or rather the "fagott" (a system used in Germanic countries and different from the French bassoon) of Milan Turković, who was a member of the Concentus Musicus Wien, and the strong horn of Günter Högner, principal horn of the Vienna Philharmonic from 1971 to 1994.
A record that has almost encyclopaedic value since it preserves the sound memory of the way in which the soloists of these two legendary orchestras play. These musicians add a specific distinction and melancholy to the music of the French musician, which is here more Poulenc and less "Poupoule" than ever. © François Hudry/Qobuz
