Busta Rhymes’s tenth album release couldn’t have come at a better time. While America is being torn apart by a historic presidential election, Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God is like a political hot potato. Through alluding to the end of the world and predicting an apocalypse, the New York rapper is getting political once more. It was the case in 2016 when Trump was elected and it’s the case again now. And he’s invited along a load of legendary producers: Nottz (the most involved amongst them), Pete Rock, DJ Premier, 9th Wonder, Swizz Beatz, Rockwilder… It’s a dream team. This amazing album is the archetype of a record that marries a respect for the past with a look to the future. The album opener E.L.E.2 Intro sets the tone: beatmaker Nottz pays tribute to New York rap by sampling Ahmad Jamal’s track I Love Music (1970) just like Pete Rock did in 1984 on Nas’s The World Is Yours. They’re three pillars of New York culture. He teams up with Mariah Carey once again on Where I Belong, reminding us of their 2002 hit I Know What You Want. Though it’s by sampling Louis Farrakhan’s speeches (E.L.E.2: The Wrath Of God), sounds from anti-Trump protests (The Purge) and by predicting America’s demise and rebirth (Satanic) that Extinction Level Event 2: The Wrath of God takes on a real - and frankly revolutionary - quality. Busta Rhymes has never made music just for mere entertainment. He feels a need to use his flow for social commentary and to try to change mentalities. All for the greater good. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz

Sofia Coppola on Air
