Aunque nominalmente se trata de un grupo de rap, Black Eyed Peas hace un llamamiento a tantas formas de composición y producción que clasificarlos en el hip-hop es como clasificar a Prince en el R&B: técnicamente cierto, pero muy limitado. Elephunk, el tercer LP del grupo, posee algunas de las composiciones más extremas del hip-hop contemporáneo (mayormente) no comercial, justo al nivel ocupado por Common y OutKast. Es también el primer álbum que incluye a Fergie, quien inicialmente sirvió como cantante invitada y más tarde se convirtió en uno de los miembros más populares del grupo. Como un Digital Underground de última época, Black Eyed Peas sabe cómo obtener una pista de fiesta en movimiento y añadir también una o dos rimas locas y estúpidas ("bop your head like epilepsy" ["sacude tu cabeza como si tuvieras epilepsia"] de la adecuadamente titulada "Let's Get Retarded").
