Doldinger Goes On captures the saxophonist in flux between the modern jazz sensibilities of his previous records and the fusion approach he later explored in full with Passport. Alternating between tenor and soprano, Doldinger achieves a lithe, glowing tone perfectly matched to the expressive grooves of keyboardist Ingfried Hoffmann -- the performances are open-ended yet focused, promising a myriad of creative possibilities while suggesting a full command of each of them. What's also impressive is the music's tasteful restraint: for all its soulfulness, Doldinger Goes On never suffers from the self-indulgence that undermines much of Doldinger's later work, and while it's a shame he never recorded another LP quite like this one, the listening experience is that much more special as a result.
