Forty years after their debut album,Washington, D.C., hardcore legends Scream have returned with a new album that reunites that same lineup—Pete Stahl (vocals) and his brother Franz Stahl (guitarist), Skeeter Thompson (bass), Kent Stax (drums)—with Fugazi frontman Ian MacKaye and Inner Ear Studios founder Don Zientara on production. In fact, it's one of the last records made at Inner Ear (where Fugazi, Minor Threat, Rites of Spring, Bad Brains and even Foo Fighters all recorded) before the studio was evicted and relocated. Surrounded by their longtime community—former member Dave Grohl shows up, as does Fugazi's Joe Lally, Make-Up's Mark Cisneros, The Hangmen's Bob Berberich and others—the band sounds incredibly spry and joyful, even when focused on the heavy socio-political topics that have long dominated its lyrics. A spoken interlude about colonialism and big business' corruption of land and people (the Keystone pipeline disaster, the Standing Rock reservation protests) haunts "Represent," which blends call-and-response, soulful harmony and two-ton classic hardcore. "Politics is Entertainment" is a particularly muscular flex, all sinewy rhythm and swirling psych guitar, as Pete Stahl cynically calls out Wall Street greed and a media-led obsession with "the wreckage … of our world": "Got you dead to rights/ Welcome to America!" There are songs seemingly influenced by the early scares of the Covid-19 pandemic (acoustic "Last of the Soft") and the ongoing racial justice movement (racing "Hell Nah"). "Somebody Love" taps into modern anxiety ("Filled with dread/ All the screams won't raise the dead") with a spooky bass line and crisp, crackling drum production, bringing to mind the arch pomp of Gene Loves Jezebel, of all things. The band effortlessly plays at fury speed ("Bored to Life," showy "I Saw Ya (Wanna Be Like Captain)") as well as striking a rug-cutting swagger ("Dead Cities") and psychobilly strut ("Faces"). There's a loose-limbed reggae love song ("Tum Tum," enlivened by Pete's holler and snapping laugh), rough-edged New Wave ("Vanishing Commissars") and a couple of acoustic numbers ("Lifeline" stands out with skronky harmonica). Opener "DC Special Sha La La" is a hardcore gallop about not letting the best moments of life slip by too quickly: "Night steals the light away … Life's too short to say goodbye/ A DC special/ Thursday afternoon/ With you, we're good/ Don't need nothing to do," Pete sings. It ends up being a lovely tribute, on multiple levels, to drummer Stax, who passed away less than two months before the album's release. © Shelly Ridenour/Qobuz
