Se supone que el término "free" (libre) que lleva el título del cuarto disco de Joss Stone se refiere a que la cantante de neo-soul se estaba liberando de las ataduras que le imponía su discográfica, EMI, que no le permitían ser ella misma. Lo que no se tiene en cuenta es que esta historia de ataduras es exactamente la misma a la que Stone recurrió con el disco que publicó en 2007, Introducing Joss Stone, el monumento al ego de esta ostentosa diva con el que se pretendía dar a conocer a la cantante "auténtica". Tampoco se tiene en cuenta el R&B moderno de aquel cambio, con el que Joss retomaba el retro-soul de sus dos primeros discos. No obstante, sus dotes de canto al natural siguen siendo impresionantes, como también lo sigue siendo su buen gusto en el soul, y ambos elementos consiguen conectar con un alma llena de complicaciones.
