The resemblance is striking. We’re talking, of course, about Inez and Ella Johansson , the two 7ebra musicians. After all, they are twin sisters. But we’re also referring to the cover of their first album and that of another female (augmented) duo’s, Wet Leg, last year’s indie pop sensation. Two girls (mere youngsters in 7ebra, adults in Wet Leg), photographed from behind; do not disturb, they’ll show up when they’re ready. And this first 7ebra album could have experienced the same beautiful destiny as Wet Leg, or at least have sounded like a broken promise. Their story is confusingly banal: in Malmö, Sweden, Inez spent hours playing the guitar in her bedroom. Her sister, Ella, sometimes joined her, but nothing more. Then they performed in concert together. Watching in the audience was Tore Johansson, the Cardigans and Franz Ferdinand producer. He offered to record them, and what followed was Bird Hour, their first album. There was no mistaking it was them, yet at the same time they sounded like a totem of today's indie rock. They were probably taught to play in the few square meters of Inez's bedroom, which comes through in their shy yet intently cocooning songs, which have a real air of sincerity about them. Inez plays guitar, Ella, the keyboards, and they sing confessional songs with their two intertwined voices, Seriousness and lightness come together, warding off any boredom and melancholy. Everything is a bit shaky, never forced, or square, like a fledgling bird about to leave the nest. Nothing new in the small world of indie pop, but the magic is still happening: it’s almost like hearing this style of music for the very first time. Barely out of their bedroom, and we’re already loving them. ©Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
