Es difícil clasificar la Misa de Bernstein, compuesta en 1971. No se trata realmente de una misa, hablando con propiedad, sino de una especie de desenmarañado de la misa tradicional; de hecho, el título completo es: MASS: A Theater piece for Singers, Players and Dancers («MISA: Una obra de teatro para cantantes, músicos y bailarines»), y el argumento podría ser el de una especie de servicio divino que se tuerce antes de regresar, finalmente, a reencontrar la paz universal. Al principio, todo el mundo parece estar sumido en un acuerdo pero luego, los «músicos callejeros» empiezan a cuestionar la necesidad, o incluso la existencia, de un dios. La cacofonía que se va instalando hasta la catastrófica Elevación es finalmente apaciguada después de que el celebrante reúna a todas las almas alrededor de la deidad y pronuncie el último «podéis ir en paz». Bernstein reunió en su partitura todos los elementos posibles e imaginables de la música del siglo XX: banda de jazz, blues, grupo de rock, Broadway, expresionismo, dodecafonismo, modernismo, que no es más que una reminiscencia de Britten, música popular, fanfarria, voces clásicas mezcladas con voces de rock y jazz, recitativos de Gospel: una auténtica Torre de Babel que no tenía por qué ser necesariamente fácil de reunir al mismo tiempo. Pero podemos confiar en Yannick Nézet-Séguin y en su saber hacer para enlazar todos estos elementos dispares. Hay que tener en cuenta que se trata de una grabación hecha en vivo y en concierto, con una distribución espacial completamente espeluznante. Curiosidad histórica, el FBI –que nunca pierde la oportunidad de ponerse en ridículo– consideró MASS como una diatriba pacifista y anti-establishment, instando a Nixon a no asistir al estreno. Presentación del Álbum

Es difícil clasificar la Misa de Bernstein, compuesta en 1971. No se trata realmente de una misa, hablando con propiedad, sino de una especie de desenmarañado de la misa tradicional; de hecho, el título completo es: MASS: A Theater piece for Singers, Players and Dancers («MISA: Una obra de teatro para cantantes, músicos y bailarines»), y el argumento podría ser el de una especie de servicio divino que se tuerce antes de regresar, finalmente, a reencontrar la paz universal. Al principio, todo el mundo parece estar sumido en un acuerdo pero luego, los «músicos callejeros» empiezan a cuestionar la necesidad, o incluso la existencia, de un dios. La cacofonía que se va instalando hasta la catastrófica Elevación es finalmente apaciguada después de que el celebrante reúna a todas las almas alrededor de la deidad y pronuncie el último «podéis ir en paz». Bernstein reunió en su partitura todos los elementos posibles e imaginables de la música del siglo XX: banda de jazz, blues, grupo de rock, Broadway, expresionismo, dodecafonismo, modernismo, que no es más que una reminiscencia de Britten, música popular, fanfarria, voces clásicas mezcladas con voces de rock y jazz, recitativos de Gospel: una auténtica Torre de Babel que no tenía por qué ser necesariamente fácil de reunir al mismo tiempo. Pero podemos confiar en Yannick Nézet-Séguin y en su saber hacer para enlazar todos estos elementos dispares. Hay que tener en cuenta que se trata de una grabación hecha en vivo y en concierto, con una distribución espacial completamente espeluznante. Curiosidad histórica, el FBI –que nunca pierde la oportunidad de ponerse en ridículo– consideró MASS como una diatriba pacifista y anti-establishment, instando a Nixon a no asistir al estreno. A sabiendas de que la obra había sido encargada por Jackie Kennedy para la inauguración del Centro Kennedy para las Artes en Washington, en pleno lodazal estadounidense en Vietnam… © SM/Qobuz
