Luciano Berio's Coro (1976), a work for 40 voices and 40 instruments, is an ambitious and difficult work, posing technical challenges for conductor and performers alike. Berio attempted to bring together his interest in folk music, his forbidding atonal assaults, and his political discourse in a single structure. This remains of considerable interest, and one might argue that the work is as relevant as it was in the politically polarized Italy of the 1970s. However, for the performers, it's a bear, with hugely varied textures, texts in six languages (Berio said five but forgot Hebrew), and tricky problems of balance. Recordings of the work by Berio and by Pierre Boulez exist, but this one, with Grete Pedersen leading the Norwegian Soloists' Choir and Norwegian Radio Orchestra, stands a bit apart from those. BIS and its fabled engineering are relevant here, for clarity is important in this work beyond almost all others. The recording of Coro includes passages from at least two performances (it's not made clear how many exactly). One was even live, but the whole thing is so artfully spliced together that it's hardly noticeable. The work is structured between soloists, who offer atonally ornamented folk songs in various languages (plus a Hebrew passage from the "Song of Songs"), and the chorus, which sings various excerpts of a line by Pablo Neruda, "Venid a ver la sangre por las calles" ("come and see the blood in the streets"). On top of this division is a larger structure in which the intensity and the overall sense of impending chaos increase as the work proceeds. The performers don't quite convey that latter quality, but the recording does reveal many small details and has the effect of getting the listener to focus on the texts and Berio's use of them. Berio's Cries of London brings down the curtain in a version for eight voices, and this most folkish of Berio's works makes an ideal pairing; Norwegian accents are minimal. Berio's admirers will welcome this recording of this problematic work.
