If there is a single opera that speaks of man's madness, it is Berg's Wozzeck, without a doubt the first avant-garde opera of the 20th century. Written between 1912 and 1922, the work borrows from "historical" forms: the pavane, the gavotte, the passacaglia, the polka; fantasia and fugue; invention, variations and so on. The composer reworks all of these to fit his idea of atonalism. This isn't twelve-tone serialism yet, and it is easy to uncover micro-tonal tendencies; the singing often comes close to "sprechgesang", and yet produces an ultra-lyrical discourse. This masterpiece is reproduced here in a recording made live on stage, at the Frankfurt Opera House, with the house troupe and orchestra, joined by a few invited singers including the Norwegian baritone Audun Iversen in the title role. Marie is sung by Claudia Mahnke, who is a member of the Frankfurt troupe, but also a regular at Bayreuth, which should give you the measure of the artist… © SM/Qobuz
