Audioslave es un encuentro entre Rage Against the Machine, menos el vocalista Zack de la Rocha, y el ex-cantante de Soundgarden Chris Cornell. Aunque ambas bandas destacaron en el metal alternativo de la década del 90, provenían de posiciones estratégicas totalmente distintas: RATM era temerariamente moderno y abordaba la política contemporánea a la guitarra con influencias de hip hop de Tom Morello, mientras que Soundgarden sacaba a relucir el metal de los 70 avivado por el espíritu del punk.
