Producer and multi-instrumentalist fan of vintage, Leon Michels regularly returns to front his oddball band El Michels Affair, capable of reinterpreting instrumentals of classics like Enter the 37th Chamber by Wu-Tang Clan or cinematographic demonstrations of retro soul. A truly unique band who have recorded for artists like Adele, Dr John, Lana Del Rey, Aloe Blacc and fittingly Wu-Tang who embarked with them on a world tour… With “Adult Themes” released on Big Crown Records, a label cofounded by Michels, the gang from Brooklyn set covers to one side and concentrate exclusively on original compositions, all instrumentals, that echo composers from the sixties and seventies like David Axelrod, François de Roubaix, Moondog and Galt MacDermot. A combination of dark soul, convincing B-movie soundtracks, and funky jazz - a goldmine for rappers in search of samples.The melodic palette is vast, orchestrations are polished and psychedelia is scattered here and there. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
