Eliahu Inbal, born in 1936, has led some of the world's top orchestras and is still at it from time to time. These live recordings by the Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart des SWR and the Sinfonieorchester des Südwestfunks, made in 1971 (for the Schumann Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120) and 2012 (for the Sibelius Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39), certainly might be regarded as footnotes to his career; neither of the orchestras involved (which eventually became one group) was in top form, and the live sound, even in 2012, is not great. Yet those who have appreciated Inbal in the past will want to hear this release. The Schumann Fourth is the standout item here; Leonard Bernstein is often credited with the revival of Schumann's symphonies, but this suggests that Inbal might have had a hand in that, too. The opening passage in the first movement is filled with German Romantic mystery in a way that few others have been, and the second movement has something more than dancelike qualities. One really follows every turn here, wondering what is coming next. The Sibelius First is also quite strong, with a masterful handling of the long climax in the opening movement. Despite the problems, this is a good start on appreciating one of the longest conducting careers of our day.
